Saving money and time from Dubai's Heavy Sands
For those of us living in Dubai for some time, having a pool in your yard to chill by in the unearthly heat of Dubai can feel like being in Heaven, but we also know how devastating the effects of Dubai sands can be. You clean the floor around the pool or perhaps your car, and the very following day (or even the same day) the sands are piling back all ready for you to clean again.
And you may not know this yet, but your swimming pool is taking a big hit as well. It may not be naked to the eye, but if you are the one cleaning the filter system of your pool, then you'd know what I'm talking about. And no, this isn't even close to how it is outside of the desert and it shouldn't be this way.
Your filters are taking a big hit that may require repair or replace it more often, costing you hundreds if not thousands additional dirhams to maintain and enjoy your swimming pool.
To avoid seeing your dream oasis turn into a puddle of mud, there are some steps mentioned below for those who have around 30 minutes per week and/or do not wish to break their bank by hiring a professional.
Make sure the water in the pool stays on top
If your pool doesn't happen to have an automated water filling system that fills water when needed, then you need to make sure you keep the water levels under control.
The desert can get really hot, and you know from basic science that hot = evaporation. Your pool can lose a lot of water during the day time which would in turn damage the pump system because air fills in and causes breakages inside of it.
A good point of reference to keep track of the water level is to look at the skimmer (the little basket that collects the leaves). Make sure the water stays at least half the height of the skimmer.
And if you need to fill some water, you can always use your gardens hose to fill in the pool.
Know your pool
Understanding how your pool equipment work is crucial if you want to go about this by yourself. Not knowing if you have the appropriate pool equipment can really cost you dearly.
If say your pools' sand filter isn't maintained well or worse, you don't have a sand filter, you can really be facing some issues that'll ultimately cost you far more than hiring a professional.
You can always just examine your pool and look up the equipment online to find out more about them and how to maintain them.
If you are not entirely sure if you've got the right equipment or if they're in good condition, you can always call up a pool technician and have them explain to you everything you need to know for a one-time fee. A lot of pool companies like ours at Dubai Pool Care offer such a service as it allows us to set a foot in the door.
Make sure you operate the pump correctly
This is something you may have to ask your real estate agent, a pool expert, or simply research about. But a good reference point to consider is that an average pool size of ~18,000 gallons should run for at least 9 hours a day for most of the year.
Since Dubai can get really hot during the summer months, you may even have to keep the pump running for 10+ hours a day.
It is important however to make sure that you have the right pump capacity for your pool size. A difference in its capacity can result in loss of water as it can be incapable of filtering the pool in due time.
Maintain your pool > consistently <
It doesn't matter if you understand your pool better than a pro and if you have all the best equipment for your pool. If you do not maintain your pool consistently, the quality of water will diminish to a point where you'll find yourself needing to hire a professional to either get your super-capable pump repaired or replaced, along with other issues around the pool.
All it takes is a maximum of 30 minutes a week to keep your pool in pristine condition despite the harsh desert conditions we have to face.
Empty the basket, chemically treat and test the water, check the filter, brush the walls and floors of the pool to keep it algae-free, vacuum it, backwash if needed.
It is important to mention that you have to know how to maintain the chemical water levels as it is crucial to keeping the water safe to swim. Especially with the hot weather we have, chlorine dissolves a lot faster than in cooler parts of the world.
So unless you don't want the pool to be dangerous to swim or see it fill up with those green algae, you want to make sure to maintain the proper pH levels, use the right balance of sanitizers and alkalinity.
You can easily pick up a water test kit from any home department or pool store.
If you think this is too much of a hassle, you can always call up one of Dubai Pool Care's pool experts to take that load off your shoulders so you won't ever have to worry about the water condition. Our weekly pool service can take care of your water levels, optimized for the weather conditions of Dubai.
Know your limitations
We often advise people to know their limits or else they'll end up having to pay more than they intended to save.
Hiring a pool expert from a professional pool company may actually save you a lot of stress. You'll be looking to pay around 300 to 500 dirhams a month which really is a good deal considering that you won't ever have to worry about your pool turning green or any funny noises the pump might be making.
A professional pool technician will make sure to look after your pools' water balance, while also maintaining a crystal clear water and the equipment in solid condition.
